An Ode to the Ordinary Stuff

In an era of decluttering, take a moment to be grateful and bless the ordinary things that may not spark joy, but inspire us to keep going.

My coffee pot,

which has been neglected, but has never neglected me —
I spotted its sister in the kitchen where I used to live,
and I wonder if these generic $20 Mr. Coffee models
are the hallmark of people starting over
(and guest houses).

To the Coasters,
which came in a box of knick-knacks donated
to my starting over cause:

I have no idea what your story is,
but you so graciously haven’t pried into mine either.
Your leather is worn
and there’s no telling what these duck heads symbolize,
yet there you are
having held a lot of comforting beverages for me
and others in prior seasons too.

To the table and chairs
and the area rug I got off Craig’s List:
I knew your owners,
even only…
