How to Be a Friend
We lament how difficult it is to make and keep friends outside of the natural social structures of school, faith communities, and common interests, but in the time of pandemic, caring for and holding on to the friendships we have is all the more vital to our sense of human connection.
“You gotta give to get,
you gotta give to get back to the love”
— El Perro del Mar
The solution to discovering you have crappy friends is to be a good one.
What are the qualities of good, strong friendships?
“A friend loves at all times.”
Proverbs 17:17
Show Up With Integrity
When someone calls, answer the phone, or if that’s too terrifying or if it's not a good time, text back ASAP to set up a time to chat. If they video message you or email, reach back within a week.
Integrity doesn’t mean you have to be a perfect person, but you need to act like you genuinely want to be in a relationship with another person. It seems small but in our “cancel” culture, all of a sudden it’s not cool to “be available” or actually admit that you enjoy spending time with another person or care about their well-being.
